Starting Together
Starting Together programs provide a great way for newly formed teams or
groups to accelerate the “getting to know you” process that can be difficult
for individuals adapting to university life. Our carefully planned sequence
of interactive activities breaks down barriers which allow participants to
build deeper levels of trust with one another in hours rather than days or
weeks.
Getting comfortable with the new group is an essential part of the team
formation process. We encourage them to step out of their comfort zones by
providing a series of team challenges that will test the group to find
creative solutions to unique problems. Lessons from each activity are
discussed and individual contributions to the success of the team are also
highlighted. Individual and group growth increases as they see immediate
results from applying the lessons in the next activity. An emphasis is
placed on HOW the team accomplished the goals so participants can see how
the group’s norms play a key role in reaching their goals.
Groups incorporating the high course challenges will benefit greatly as we
build on this foundation by raising the challenge level even higher as
individuals face their fears head on. Participants experience firsthand what
we mean by “appropriate risk taking” as they learn to feed off the positive
energy, support and trust of this new team to tackle a challenge that might
have seemed impossible earlier in the day. We wrap up this shared experience
by tying the lessons learned back to their group’s goals and have them
recognize new friends who helped them out during the day. The most common
comment we hear is “I can’t believe how far we’ve grown as a team in one
day,” and that comes through loud and clear by witnessing the beaming smiles
in the group photos taken before they leave.

"Students were brought closer together through the challenges they faced,
they truly understood and experienced teamwork, and it honestly changed the way my students interacted with each other."
